Calendar of Events

Doña Ana County and City of Las Cruces have Proclaimed the Month of February as “All Types of Cancer Awareness Month”.  February is also “National Cancer Prevention Month” and CARE’s “Kick-off Month”.  June includes “National Cancer Survivors Day”.  The color “Lavender” represents all cancers.  The color “Purple” represents the color for cancer survivors.  CARE includes the colors lavender and purple in much of what we do.

Why CARE and Why CARE has events?:  CARE helps give cancer patients the ability to access vital life-saving treatments without making a difficult choice between non-medical and medical necessities. Through our CARE Support Program, CARE assists Doña Ana County low-to-moderate income cancer patients who struggle with the financial toxicity of a cancer diagnosis during their active treatment.  Yoli Diaz, CARE President said, “Our mission is all about helping local cancer patients who are going through one of the most difficult journeys of their life – cancer treatment.  By receiving help to fill in financial gaps for non-medical expenses, such as gas cards to go to and from treatment, food cards for groceries and nutritional supplements, payments for utility bills, rent or mortgage, self-pay health insurance, and medical travel expenses, local cancer patients can focus on their treatment, healing and recovery.”  Proceeds from events support the CARE Support Program.

FEBRUARY – Heroes & Hoops for CARE on February 1, 2020 is our “kick-off” event.  It will be held at Onate High School gym.  Games begin at 10:00 a.m.  Doors will open at 9:00 a.m.

Heroes & Hoops for CARE is a fun sporting event that includes our local first responders from the City of Las Cruces Fire Department, City of Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police Department who will battle it out on the basketball court to raise money and awareness for CARE, cancer prevention and all types of cancer.  The winner will display the trophy (with bragging rights) until the next year when they will defend their title or pass the trophy to the next winner.  Proceeds of this event will be used for the CARE Support Program to help eligible local cancer patients, recently diagnosed and in active treatment.
